A MINI BIOGRAPHY
OF HELEN (aka ELENA) CORDERO PRIBIL

My parents came from a small town (Dapdap, Pilar) from a small island of Camotes - north of Cebu. Born in Cebu City, I came from a poor large family of 5 boys and 2 girls. My father was then the Mess and Supply Officer of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (aka Cebu Provincial Jail) which was located along M. J. Cuenco Avenue (Martires Street). My mother died in 1977 and my father remarried and has 2 more children.

Finished my primary/elementary education at Tejero Elementary School (a public school). I then enrolled (in 1970) and finished High School at the Colegio de San Jose - Recoletos in 1975. Continued my higher education at Velez College for my pre-nursing and actually a pioneer graduate of the University of San Carlos-College of Nursing finishing BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) in 1980.

Done odd jobs as a company nurse of White Gold Incorporated (North Reclamation Area), Tresco Canning Corporation (Casuntingan, Mandaue City), and at Delsan Shipping Lines (Navotas, Metro Manila) until I realize that nothing will happen with my life unless I changed it for the best. I then worked at Cebu Doctor's Hospital.
Met my husband George Walter Pribil (he was in Cebu to attend a wedding of a friend) on the 12th of February 1990 in a coffee shop at Gaisano Metro when Cebu City was rocked by a 6.3 strong quake.  We got married in the same year and came to Australia in 1991. My first work experienced was in Sale Hospital aka Gippsland Base Hospital (a countryside hospital in the state of Victoria) which is about 270 kilometers to the city of Melbourne.  George worked in an oil and gas exploration company which is a subsidiary of ESSO/EXXON.

We lived in Stratford, a small town about 20 kilometers from Sale, until September 1999 and moved closer to Melbourne; to the Shire of Mornington Peninsula (the holiday capital to Melburnians !!!) which is about 90 kilometers to the city.

We have no children between us due to a medical condition (bilateral benign tumour) wherein my ovaries were removed. George had 3 boys on his first marriage. The eldest is in his 40's and has 2 young girls.

George worked on a week on/week off basis in the oil rig off Bass Strait thus we made it a point that whenever we have a week off or days off together, we travel and explore Australia. We flew to Perth or to Queensland or drove to Adelaide, South Australia or to Canberra or Sydney, New South Wales.  We hope to see Horbart, Tasmania and Darwin in Northern Territory in the future. We have also visited the west coast of USA in 2003 when we attended a wedding of George's cousin in Simi Valley, California.  We hired and drove a car to the Grand Canyon and visited Las Vegas, the Sequoia National Park, and San Francisco and a few places in Los Angeles.  In 2008, again, we hired and drove a car around Europe visiting countries like England, Scotland, France, Andorra, The Pyrenees, Spain, the Principality of Monaco, the south of France, Italy, Hungary (where George's parents come from), Austria (where George was born in 1949), Switzerland, Czech Republic, Germany, The Netherlands, and Belgium.

Peter Allen sang a song that goes these way, " I've been to cities that never close down . . . . but no matter how far and wide I roam . . ."

Ernest Hemingway says:

"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page."
